About the Course
Every mission in orbit depends on knowing what else is up there. Tens of thousands of objects are tracked today, and close approaches are part of daily operations. This course gives military personnel a rigorous yet accessible foundation in Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) and Space Situational Awareness (SSA).
The goal is operational intuition: what is in orbit, how we track it and what happens when objects come close. You also get to know the data products and organisations that make up the real-world SSA ecosystem. Worked numerical examples and live demonstrations with GMAT and in-house scripts are part of every topic, and the tools used in class are available to participants on request.
Who should attend
- Officers and NCOs moving into space, air or joint staff positions
- Personnel of space operations and SST/SSA centres
- Analysts and planners who work with orbital data
- Civil servants and industry professionals in space surveillance
What you will learn
- Read orbital regimes, orbital elements and standard SSA data products
- Explain how radar, optical and laser sensors detect and track objects
- Assess threats, risks and collision scenarios and judge when action is needed
- Understand the role of SSA in European defence and international cooperation
- Take and justify decisions in a simulated crisis
